Postgraduate Studies (Master's degree)

The University of Freiburg offers a consecutive degree in Social Anthropology aimed at students with a degree in the Social and Cultural Sciences.

The Master's degree "Social and Cultural Anthropology" is a research-oriented programme. This implies that students will enhance and deepen their ethnographic and theoretical knowledge by means of self-directed and theoretically-led research. In studies concerning cultures and intercultural dynamics, the worldviews and identity constructions, social as well as economic and political systems, ecological aspects, ways of thinking, behaviour and representation, provide the main focus of enquiry.  Through study of anthropological research in the global world, including skills associated with cultural and transcultural expertise, it is our aim to provide the student with thorough and relevant qualifications for the future. The aim of this degree is for students to acquire the ability to act independently in different regions of the world within various fields of work and scientific scopes. Students are encouraged to develop methodological and analytical skills, and to employ ethnographic knowledge, cultural sensitivity and intercultural techniques of discourse as well as practical and strategic modes of behaviour in their research. Special attention is given to the personal study project, which counts towards part of the degree. It is to be carried out by the students and will allow them to establish their own priorities and develop an individual academic and / or vocational profile.
